Naufrage Barn Swallow Nesting Structure

Project Summary:

The goal of this project was to further establish Naufrage Harbour as a location where wildlife is protected and supported. The Friends of Shipwreck Point Lighthouse Inc. wish to promote the locale as a historic, recreational and wildlife destination to tourists and nature enthusiasts. The American Bald Eagles were the first to benefit from the establishment of perches. Nature signage explaining the eagles was also erected in 2016. Due to the removal of derelict fishing structures, used as nesting sites for the endangered Barn Swallow, the Friends resolved to establish a permanent nesting location to replace the lost habitat. The Barn Swallow nesting structure was completed in June of 2018. The structure is now in place for the 2019 nesting season.
