Abegweit Biodiversity Enhancement Hatchery PEI Wild Fish Stocking Program
Project Summary:
The months of January, February and March of 2019 were very uneventful with very few losses of eggs or fry. This project provided direct benefits to wild salmonid populations through the incubation and raring of eggs gathered from wild fish to stock originating from select rivers, which will be used for restocking rivers that experience fish kills due to contaminates from runoff: The rivers are repopulated immediately instead of taking years to re-establish the ecosystem niche/trophic levels that the salmonids occupy. Fish not used for restocking rivers having fish kills in 2019 will be returned to their river of origin with 4,000 reserved for the stocking of ponds across the province.
